Yellow Jackets – Not Bees

Received a call on Monday saying there is a colony of honey bees building combs externally between the fence and some jasmine vines. I was not able to make it out there until today. I didn’t find any honey bees but found a colony of Yellow Jackets who did not build on the fence but has a underground yellow jacket hive. I guess it’s kind of hard to identify yellow jackets and honey bees in-flight but to an experienced eye like mine, I can tell immediately even if they are flying. Honey bees are shorter in length and are wider. Yellow jackets and wasps are more slender. Shape, color,  and the way they fly are different as well.

Here’s a picture of a yellow jacket
