Crazy For Swarms – 18 ft Up, No Safety Gear, Climbing Tree… in the Dark!

We have swarm fever or just call us crazy. Got a call Thursday evening regarding another swarm in Los Altos. On the phone Carlos estimated it was only 10 feet but when I got there it was at least 18 feet up in a tree! And not make things harder they were clustered up on a big trunk so it wasn’t one of those easy to shake swarms. We brought our multi-ladder but decided to use Carlos’ extension ladder instead since those are easier to set up and are much lighter in weight.

Can you spot the swarm? It’s left of the tip of the extension ladder. It was 7 PM and by the time we were set up it was completely dark. I climbed up first with the box in one hand and trying to not let go of the ladder with the other hand. I had to climb and stand on a main branch so my dad can come up on the ladder behind me to help hive the swarm. It was not an easy task and in the dark without safety harnesses. It was a little crazy but no one got hurt although my dad got stung at least 5 times and twice for me. And yes, we got the queen. 🙂
